The other side of the World

How much does the common person truly know about the other half of the world? Most, if not everything I know about everything happening in the East, be that Russia, North Korea, Syria, Pakistan, Israel, Afghanistan (the list goes on), but I only know about it from a Western perspective; from the media and from our Western government. I don't fully trust either of them to give us (the common person) the entire picture; I guess most of us don't really need to know, but that's besides the point.

Do the majority of us simply believe what we're told? Most news sites at the moment will have a bunch of articles on how messed up Russia, North Korea, or [insert other country] are, and about all the things wrong there, or how much threat is posed from said country. I mention this following an article about a celebrity (I can't remember who it was, but it was a signer) who has been quoted as saying North Korea (and it's unstable leader) isn't half as dangerous as they're made out to be.

I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
